We are an architectural studio based in Bega on the Sapphire Coast, Australia.
Our work draws on the regional building forms and reworks them in a quiet, reduced contemporary form. Local materials, restrained colour, and careful detailing matter. So do high-performing building envelopes combined with solar passive design, because comfort and running costs are decided long before anyone moves in.
The studio was established in 2017 by Olaf Thiele, who brings together more than ten years of experience in prefab and timber architecture in Germany and a decade of Australian practice. Collaboration with builders, engineers, and trades is welcomed, and brought in early rather than late.
We work closely with our clients through every stage, and take each site and each owner on their own terms. Most of our thinking happens before construction begins. It is cheaper to move lines on a screen than a wall once it’s built, an often overlooked aspect in the building industry.

It’s a long journey from Germany to the South Coast Australia and founder and Architect Olaf Thiele of olaf.thiele.architektur has successfully made the leap, bringing with him a love of thoughtfully designed sustainable homes and a European sense for space. Integrity of work and in life is of paramount importance.
Olaf received his degree in architecture at the HafenCity University in Hamburg and gained 15+ years of experience, working on projects ranging from furniture fit-outs to school precinct master planning. The bulk of my working experience has been in Hamburg, Cape Town and Sydney, working on educational projects as well as on high end residential architecture.
He enjoys mountain biking, bikram yoga and spending time in nature. And cheering on the sideline when my daughters play AFL.
